Why Is Direct Mail the Only Marketing Channel We Can’t Measure in Omnichannel Campaigns?

Every marketing channel has changed over the past decade.

  • Email tells us who opened, clicked, and converted.
  • Paid search shows exactly which keywords generated revenue.
  • Social media reports impressions, engagement, and attribution almost instantly.
  • Even websites tell us where visitors came from, what they looked at, and what they did next.

Then there’s direct mail. For many organizations, the reporting still looks something like this:

  • “We mailed 2 million pieces.”
  • And then… silence.
  • Did customers actually receive them?
  • Which regions have delivery delays?
  • When should follow-up emails begin?
  • Which audience segments responded first?
  • Which lists generated the best return?

Most marketing teams can’t answer those questions until weeks after the campaign has ended—if they can answer them at all.

That’s wrong.

Direct mail is often one of the largest line items in the marketing budget, yet it’s one of the least visible.

It doesn’t have to be.

The mailstream already contains much of the information marketers need. Delivery events, address quality, customer engagement, and campaign outcomes can all be connected to create a much clearer picture of campaign performance.

The challenge isn’t that direct mail can’t be measured. It’s that most organizations have never connected mail to the rest of their digital marketing technology stack.

Imagine managing direct mail the same way you manage email or paid search.

  • Watching delivery as it happens.
  • Launching digital follow-up when customers actually receive a piece.
  • Measuring campaign performance while it’s still running instead of weeks later.
  • Knowing which audiences produced the highest return before planning the next campaign.

That’s where direct mail is headed (is now).

It’s no longer just something you send.

It’s another measurable marketing channel.

The organizations that embrace that shift won’t simply mail more effectively.

They’ll make better marketing decisions across every channel.

In our next article, we’ll explain why every piece of mail is already generating the data that makes this possible—and why we think of every mailpiece as a sensor.
