United States Postal Service Turns 250!

The USPS 250th anniversary is coming soon: July 26, 2025. In celebration, there will be multiple activities throughout the week of July 21 —  including a reception at the Smithsonian Postal Museum the evening of Tuesday, July 22.

On Wednesday, July 23, at noon at the USPS headquarters in Washington, DC, they will release new stamps and a 32-page prestige booklet. Included will be two self-adhesive sheets of a new intaglio printed stamp featuring Benjamin Franklin. The stamp is based on a 1875 reproduction of an 1847 5-cent stamp, one of the first official U.S. postage stamps.  A new forever stamp titled “250 Years of Delivery” tells the story of a mail carrier making daily rounds during a year.

The Postal Service was established in 1775, one year before the United States of America was founded.

While the US accounts for only 4% of the world’s population, the USPS handles 44% of all mail worldwide.
