Paused Operations Until 2025:

Major Network Facility Expansions:

  • Regional Processing & Distribution Centers (RPDCs):
    • Expansion Delays: The full rollout of RPDCs, which are critical for centralizing and optimizing mail processing, is delayed. These centers are designed to handle large volumes of mail and packages efficiently, but their complete implementation will now be postponed until 2025.
      • Affected RPDCs: New RPDC facilities planned for locations such as:
        • Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Atlanta, GA; Greensboro, NC; Indianapolis, IN; Jacksonville, FL; North Houston, TX; Oklahoma City, OK; Santa Clarita, CA
      • Impact: This delay impacts the USPS’s ability to fully optimize mail sorting and delivery on a regional level, potentially leading to longer processing times and less efficient mail distribution in these areas.
  • Local Processing Centers (LPCs):
    • Postponement: The rollout of new LPCs, which are intended to support RPDCs by handling local mail more efficiently, is also delayed until 2025. LPCs play a vital role in reducing transit times and processing costs by managing local deliveries.
    • Affected LPCs: The establishment of new LPCs in locations such as:
      • Fort Lauderdale, FL; Beaverton, OR; Kalamazoo, MI; Lakeland, FL
    • Impact: The delay in new LPCs means that local mail processing may not be as efficient as planned, potentially leading to delays and increased costs for local mail handling.
  • Sorting & Delivery Centers (S&DCs):
    • Suspended Activations: S&DC activations do not seem to be affected by the pause

Postponed Enhancements: Certain transportation and logistical improvements will be deferred until 2025.

Ongoing Operations:

Incremental Improvements:

  • Workflow Optimization: USPS continues to refine and optimize existing workflows within its current network, focusing on enhancing efficiency and performance despite the delay in major expansions.
  • Facility Enhancements: Upgrades to current facilities are ongoing, aimed at modernizing equipment and improving overall operational capacity.

Sustainability Efforts:

  • Electric Vehicles: The USPS is expanding its fleet of electric vehicles, aiming to reduce carbon emissions significantly. This effort is part of a broader sustainability initiative to modernize the fleet and reduce environmental impact.

Facility Upgrades:

  • Ongoing Enhancements: Existing RPDCs and LPCs are being upgraded to improve their operational capabilities. These upgrades include modernizing equipment, improving workflows, and increasing overall capacity.

Key Facilities Continuing Operations:

  • Regional Processing & Distribution Centers (RPDCs):

    • Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Atlanta, GA; Greensboro, NC: Indianapolis, IN; Jacksonville, FL; North Houston, TX; Oklahoma City, OK; Santa Clarita, CA
  • Local Processing Centers (LPCs):

    • Existing Sites: USPS continues to upgrade existing LPCs to enhance their operational capabilities. These facilities are crucial for handling local mail efficiently and reducing transit times. Upgraded LPCs include:

      • Boston, MA; New Brunswick, NJ; Newark, NJ; Phoenix Rio Salado, AZ; Springfield, MA; Stockton, CA; Southern Maryland, MD; Hicksville, NY
      • South Houston, TX LPC LIVE as of August 24, 2024
    • New Sites for 2024: USPS plans to add new LPCs to bolster its network further. These new sites will support the RPDCs and enhance local mail processing:

      • Fort Lauderdale, FL; Beaverton, OR; Kalamazoo, MI; Lakeland, FL
  • Sorting & Delivery Centers (S&DCs):
    • Active and upcoming locations include:

      • Pompano Beach, FL; South Atlanta, GA; Binghamton, NY; Charlottesville, VA; Erie, PA; Flint, MI; Hampton, VA; Hattiesburg, MS; Irvine, CA; Jackson, MI; Lafayette, IN; Oxnard, CA; Salem, OR; Richmond, VA; Stewart, NY; Southeastern, PA; Waco, TX; Beaverton, OR; Boston, MA; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Hicksville, NY; Kalamazoo, MI; Lakeland, FL; New Brunswick, NJ; Newark, NJ; Orange, CA; Phoenix Rio Salado, AZ; Southern Maryland, MD; Springfield, MA; Stockton, CA
