On February 18th the USPS announced that the PMG notified the Postal Service Board of Governors (BOG) that after nearly five years as the 75th Postmaster General it is time for them to begin the process of identifying his successor.
At that time, the process was expected to unfold over several months, with the BOG first hiring a search firm to identify potential candidates, followed by a selection process.
However, just 34 days later, on March 24th, the PMG made a surprise announcement that today would be his last day in the role.
Deputy Postmaster General Douglas Tulino will immediately assume the duties of Acting Postmaster General and CEO of the United States Postal Service, while the search firm continues its search for a permanent replacement.
In a joint statement from PMG DeJoy and BOG Chairperson Amber McReynolds, confidence was expressed in Deputy Postmaster General Tulino and his ability to continue the positive momentum with the management team and the dedicated employees of USPS. They reaffirmed their commitment to driving the Postal Service toward financial sustainability and operational excellence.
The reasons for the sudden departure remain unclear, with some speculating that growing dissatisfaction in Congress over the PMG’s agreement with DOGE could be a factor. Others suggest that the administration may be seeking more immediate cost reductions and improved revenue performance, which have yet to materialize.
The situation is quite fluid and GrayHair is watching closely. We will provide updates when we have them.
