Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has announced that the USPS® will pause its efforts on the Delivering for America (DFA) network rollout beginning in August, citing peak season and elections. This decision comes after DeJoy clarified the DFA initiatives the USPS would and would not be suspending, after receiving pressure from a bipartisan group of 26 Senators. Last week, lawmakers had asked the Postal Service to pause consolidation efforts after severe mail slowdowns were reported in Georgia, Texas, and Virginia.

In addition to the pause in ground transportation improvements, Postmaster General DeJoy has decided to pause the USPS network modernization plans until January 2025. This affects nearly 60 out of 427 facilities under review for potential changes. DeJoy assured that any future changes will be gradual and involve further consultation.

In a 6-page letter accompanied by a 3-page status report sent to Senator Gary Peters, DeJoy outlined the paused implementation status of the Mail Processing Facility Reviews, along with ongoing 2024 activities. The USPS issued a press release linking to DeJoy’s letter, explaining the decision-making process behind the pause.

Lawmakers also called for the USPS to pause other parts of the DFA Plan, including a controversial plan to reroute Nevada’s mail to Sacramento before returning it to Nevada, which was not included in DeJoy’s list of paused initiatives.

In a section titled “Ground Transportation” in his letter to lawmakers, DeJoy stated that the Postal Service runs approximately 50,000 truck transport trips a day. He highlighted ongoing efforts to design and implement better routings for both national and local transportation, aiming to improve efficiency and reliability. These initiatives are expected to continue through August, after which they will be paused to accommodate the demands of the elections and peak season.
